Hi, can the Stitcher Pro de-barrelize images taken with a Nikon fisheye 10.5mm and also recognize and convert NEF files? If yes, does this mean I do not need to use Nikon Capture NX first?

Hi cyntlee!

I am going to reply to your questions in a different order from your post.

Stitcher does not read any proprietary RAW formats such as .NEF, you must first convert these files to PSD, TIFF, or JPEG, etc.

Stitcher does not "de-barrelize" images taken with the Nikkor 10.5mm or any other fisheye. De-barrelize applies to rectilinear images.

Stitcher does understand the geometry of fisheye images and so you do not need to make this kind of (distortion) correction in Capture NX - but you do need to convert your images into one of the formats mentioned previously.

And highly recommended - use SmartBlend (PC) or enblend (Mac) as part of the render process. These "blending" routines clean up any loose ends that the stitching process does not get right.

Hi Cyntlee

As Jim wrote Stitcher supports the Nikon 10,5 fisheye very well. Save as tiff in Capture and stitch. Smart blend is slooooow, but the very best choice. Start it up before bedtime, and see the result the next morning...

Hi.MR.Jim Scott
Long time no see! Many years have past. Now i also changed my equipment. With Nikon D80+Nikon 10.5 fisheye ,Stitcher can give a ideal
result. I want to buy a new  Nikon D300. How about  Nikon D300 + Nikon 10.5 fisheye ,can Stitcher autostitch again?

    Best wishes.

Thanks all,

If I only need to convert the .NEF files, do you prefer Capture NX or Adobe Photoshop (with Camera Raw plug-in)? I have the older Capture 4.

Cheers,

Hi sunqiao!

Indeed its been awhile.

I do not have any experience with the D300 + 10.5. I can't think of a reason why it wouldn't work. Hopefully some one else on this list can provide you with an answer.

Hi cyntlee!

I also have the older Capture 4 and tried NX as a demo. I've never been able to warm up to Nikon's computer interfaces. Others on this forum have used Capture in the past and seemed to really like it. Possibly NX is still available as a demo on Nikon's site for you to evaluate.

To confirm, you can use the D300 with the Nikon 10.5mm for spherical imaging. The problem is the default setting in the D300 will revert the camera to "DX" mode which reduces the sensor coverage to that of a D200.

If you don't want that, you can turn the setting off so you're getting full frame coverage but now the built in lens hood gets into the field of view. It's possible however to either "shave off" or physically disassemble the lens to remove the hood.

the D300 is a DX format camera, (1.5 sensor crop) same as D200, D70, etc

its the D3 that is full frame, referred to as FX by nikon, that would behave as above -

Yes, quite right. Brain was in meltdown when I posted that reply...

The D300 works perfectly with the Nikon 10.5mm and no adjustments are required.

i just picked up a D300 the other day actually, and yep, it works quite well with the 10.5 mm fisheye -

however, for some reason, RVSTU 5.5.4 is not recognizing the exif info from the D300, (jpgs, right off the card) although it recognized the D200 jpgs exif just fine -

im doing a bit more testing, more info later
