» » philliproberts | Can anybody help me solve this problem?
When I try to render panoramas using "External" method Stitcher goes through the motions but doesn't produce a file. I'm using the /Applications/REALVIZ/Stitcher Unlimited 5.6/enblend 3/enblend-3.0 universal/enblend path. launchblendscript is also in the Stitcher Unlimited 5.6 folder.
I'm shooting 32 frames with a Nikon DX1 and Sigma 15mm-30mm zoom
I'm then using a Dual 2 Ghz Mac PowerPC G5 running Tiger for post photography retouching and stitching.
Thanks in advance for any advice. |
Jim Scott | Hi Phillip!
I had the exact same problem and have an almost identical set-up to yours. I thought this would be a mini-ordeal to figure out, but my fix was to re-select the "Blending Software" yet again in "Preferences > External Links" and this worked.
If it doesn't solve your problem consider tossing your Stitcher Preferences file (rightclick/control click the app to "Show the Package Contents" to get to this file. Maybe even tossing the "uipreference" as well).
As a last resort there is the re-install of Stitcher - not sure if this would help.
Being a Mac user though this will be well worth the effort to get working. Using "SmartBlend" on a 4200 px spherical the approximate render time is 4 min 30 secs; with "enblend 3.0" it is 1 min 20 secs. ---------------

Jim Scott | Hi Phillip!
Well I hexed myself...
As part of my response to you I ran enblend 3.0 and then SmartBlend in a speed trial to confirm the time differential. Afterwards loaded enblend 3.0 again to process a pano and got zero results (just like the old days) - it runs and then nothing.
I tried my first suggestion to you (re-select enblend 3.0 in "Preferences" ). Still nothing.
I had been doing a JPEG spherical render (which I rarely do) from 16-bit TIFFS when enblend 3.0 refused to work. So I tried using v1.3 of enblend with the JPEG render - which worked as it always has. This version runs a bit slower than v3.0 but still much faster than SmartBlend.
And then an epiphany, and this is the season for epiphanies... I reloaded enblend 3.0 and rendered to TIFF (not JPEG), and voila - it worked.
So I'm not sure what the exact snag is. v1.3 of enblend worked with anything - but v3.0 is more finicky, at least with Stitcher v5.6. I am using 16-bit TIFFs in the stitch and TIFFs are apparently what v3.0 likes as the output format; perhaps PSD format works too - haven't tried it... maybe 8-bit TIFFs will go to JPEG in enblend 3.0, haven't tried this either.
So if you are using 16-bit TIFFs as your source files and trying to render to spherical JPEG using enblend 3.0 this could be your problem. But no matter what your source files try rendering to spherical TIFF to see if this doesn't get you an output file, and then whittle the parameters back to find the limitation.
------------
Side Note: When the spherical render time hits around 80% Stitcher will appear to hang (99% in larger files, eg. 8000+ px) - but it is enblend going to work. In earlier versions of Stitcher the Terminal window (Mac) would appear during this time and go through its paces. Message edited by Jim Scott on 12-23-2007 at 03:06:22 AM ---------------

philliproberts | Hi Jim,
Sorry for the delay in my reply (work commitments, Christmas, New year etc). Followed your suggestion and all seems very smooth, though at the the moment I’ve gone back to using V 1.3, (seems more reliable than V 3.0 as I’m now running Leopard). So I’ll leave well be for now, at least until full Leopard support from Realviz. Another recent change I’ve made, is I’m now using a Sigma 8mm F4, so instead 32 images I can now capture in 4 + nadir. how much this has had an extra effect in quality I’m not sure, but I’m now 100% happy with my panoramas.
Thanks for your help.
