I have an odd problem.  I am bringing in helper images into my project and I had a bunch of digital pictures that were all stretched out.  The resolution of all the pictures were 300dpi 2560x1920.  I changed the resolution to 250dpi and 200dpi and no change.  But when I adjusted the pixel dimentions to 300dpi 1280x960, the picture was fine.  I also changed it up to 300dpi 3413x256 and the picture was fine agian.  Many pixel dimentions between were distorted.  2133x1600 was very bad.  2347x1760 was bad as well.  2773x2080 was the worst of them all.  But when I placed my curser over the image, the magnifier window would display it correctly. Maybe you can try to display 3D textures instead of 2D bunch of pixels. Some ATI cards are not efficient on this.
Go in the preferences (press P), in image tab and check the show 3D textures in 2D mode. It should fix your display.

Thanks.  That worked.  I am using an ATI card with a RADEON 9600 XT VPU, just so you know.
