I started a project with a 3D helper size of 50 on accident and I tracked my sequence, solved the camera and now I can't make them small.  I change the size to 1 or .5 and nothing happens.  I can't even see if I have a good solve because the screen is a big mess in 3D view.  Is anyone else having this problem?  I am stuck with gigantic 3D helpers?

You need to change the helper size in the current project parameters, not the global preferences which are used for future project. Simply go to the 3D view, and press ESC to be sure nothing is selected. Then, in the parameters window on the right pane, you can edit all the 3D view current settings.
