Photo stage setup suggestions?

Hi all,

Now that I have a photogrammetrics program (ImageModeler, of course), a nice staging area for photographing normal sized objects (1 cu. in. to 4 cu. ft.) is next on my agenda.  I have a digital camera and have read the manual, especially the section on taking quality shots.

Here's what I'm considering and feel free to critique and assist as necessary.

1. An elevated transparent platform on which the object sits using plexiglass or similar in order to get shots from beneath the object.  Thinking about etching a grid into the plexiglass for easier calibration.

2. Either a four-sided or cylindrical matte-white, gridded wall around the platform for more calibration and diffusion of lighting.

3. Some sort of lighting. :)  Not certain what would be the best type of lighting, how much, best placement, and how many to reduce shadows, avoid need for camera flash, and still retain surface/texture detail.

Thanks,

Robert Templeton
