I just purchased IM4 for Windows. The installation keeps failing. The archive unpacks fine. I double click on the install package executable, the package unpacks, the installer starts then I get this message:

"An error occurred while parsing command line arguments or reading Setup.ini.

No such interface supported."

What does this mean? What interface?

I also unpacked the package manually with WinZIP and the same error occurs when double clicking on setup.exe. I tried running as "administrator" and from the administrator account proper. Same result. I killed every process/task I could using EndItAll, same result.

Any ideas?

System info:
Type: PC
OS: Windows Vista 32 bits
OS Version: sp1
RAM capacity: 3 gig
Graphic Board: NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT
Graphic Board Driver Version: 7.15.11.7474

Hi David,

So is this from a physical CD installation or a download?

Download. I downloded and tried the full version, demo version and now another unique download link supplied by RealViz tech support.

I'm sure REALVZ support have probably given you some pointers but here's a few:

1. Have you tried installing on a second machine (this should identify any fault in the download)
2. Have you performed a clean uninstall before trying again (i.e. normal uninstall plus deleting folders and clearing registry references)
3. Are you using the latest graphics drivers?
4. I personally hate Vista because of the dreaded UAC issues. Have you disabled the user account protections that often screw a Vista installation?
5. Have you tried not only another machine, but one NOT using Vista...

1. Not tried a second machine yet. I need it on my Vista machine.
2. I didn't have a version to uninstall
3. Yes, I've tried several versions of drivers, no luck
4. YES, YES, YES UAC is gone, disabled, destroyed, deleted, I hope died a most horrible and miserable death. Seriouisly, yes I have UAC disabled. I tried "run as administrator" and I logged onto the administrator account proper and tried there.
5. No, don't have one I can try.

I suspect the archive is fine since it happens with three separate packages. I installed MM HD version 4 with no problems, too. I just don't understand why IM is choking.

1. or rather, I need it on my laptop since that is where I run my business and do all my work. It won't help to have it on a different machine...

Hi David,

The only reason for trying a different machine is to confirm the issue is machine specific. Not that you should permanently use a different machine.

I recall something about if IM doesn't install first time there's something in the registry you need to fix before you can re-install. I'll see if I can find something about it tomorrow but you may need to get back to support@realviz.com on this one.

Right, sorry, brain freeze. Confirm it is the machine/OS not the install package by installing it on a second machine. I can give it a shot tonight.

Interesting about the registry. I've not heard back from tech support yet after the failed attempt with their "special" install package.

If you find something, please let me know. Thank you again for your time.

Dear David and Andrew,

I don't think this will change any of David's problems, but:

Quote :

Are you using the latest graphics drivers?

Sometimes, you are much better off with the " before latetest" drivers...

David: If your problem persists, can you put the packed file on a ftp for download?

Best regards

Tim

RE: drivers... I've tried several different versions and all give me the error. The drivers give me no problem with other installations or graphic applications (including MM HD)

Yes, I can put the packed fle on an ftp site, but I don't want to violate copyrights. The easiest is to try the demo package for IM4. It gives me the same error.

Thanks Tim. You've helped me before and I still remember that, thanks.

FIXED!! I have had to learn more stupid little trivia about Windows than I ever wanted to...

I found this link:
http://knowledge.macrovision.com/s [...] &sliceId=1

which led to this link:
http://knowledge.macrovision.com/s [...] &sliceId=1

Apparently, the ikernel installation can become corrupted and a re-install following this page's instructions has fixed it. Heaven only knows what other subtle errors lurk in the heart of Windows Vista...

Anyway, thanks for the help guys.

David
